Little Atheïst

Bericht door PietV. »

Op freethunk heb je diverse stripverhalen. Eén daarvan heb ik er tussen uit gehaald. En een aantal exemplaren zet ik onvertaald op freethinker. Little Atheist is gecreëerd door Jeff Swenson.

I have been thinking about doing an atheist character for quite awhile but with all of the projects and work I do there is very little time. Finally I decided I might as well do a comic strip and update it as often as I can so I can create a series. Thus we start small with The Littlest Atheist. He's naive, asks a lot of questions and just wants to be a kid. More character info come.

So the name of the Littlest Atheist is Bertrand. His deceased father is Paul and his mother name? Well, I haven't decided yet...

It's true. When I went to Sunday School I always imagined Heaven as a big place with puffy clouds and not much to do. Supposedly you stand around all day and praise God, but how many people in the pews looked bored doing that? Some new Christian standards would have you believe that maybe there'll be electric guitar in Heaven? Yeah, right, and offend the old folks like Peter.

This is a variation on the moral absolutes argument. If God created absolutes of anything than he is also bound by them and can no longer be considered all powerful. If God is still all powerful than the absolutes can be changed and therefore they are not absolutes.

The argument that nonbelievers choose to go to hell and be forever burned is a way for Christians to dismiss their own sense of right and wrong and embrace and ultimately cower before the morality of an egotistical God. No one chooses to be tortured and no one chooses Hell. It is ridiculous to say so and if God is a basis for morality than His kind of thinking is certainly bad for the human race.

When I was a Christian I had a pretty big collection of Gospel T-shirts. Wearing them pretty much made me look like a religous freak. I think since they've been popularized more people are wearing these Tees now but when I was in Highschool I saw maybe two other kids who wore gospel messages once in a blue moon while I wore them at least once a week. I thought I was doing the Lord's work. I think it's more likely that I was crippling my social life. Even Church kids thought I was extreme.

What does it really mean that "we're made in God's image"? I would prefer to think human beings could escape "God's image" because God is a public relations nightmare. He's a diva who at one moment is doing incredible artistic feats and showing sympathy and at another moment he's throwing a jealous tantrum and killing everyone.

Creationists have attempted to back up the Noachian Flood by trying to calculate how two of every kind of animal would fit on a floating barge. Mainly they do this as a result of the question: Well, what about the dinosaurs, they're too big? Their answer is to make all of the dinosaurs babies.

But the bigger "stupidity" of trying to scientifically prove a religious story is lost when we argue about such little things. In religion God can do anything so how is that creationists feel compelled to logically explain the story in the first place?. It is not logical for animals to line up in pairs from all over the earth to enter an ark. It is not logical that animals wouldn't start eating each other, killing each other or stepping on each other. It is not logical to wipe out your perfect creation with a flood when you can snap your fingers and make all of the bad people disappear instead of punishing most animals by drowning.

There is nothing logical or scientific about the flood except that logically it makes sense that a disaster occurred and the people affected tried to explain it in superstitious terms. If a perfect and orderly God were involved there would not be a disasterous flood used in such a barbaric and reckless way with the end result being a drunken Noah and some incest coming out of the other side.

I am always perplexed by people saying the world is getting worse and not better--even those who aren't religous. The world is better now than it ever has been. Why? Because of science and technology. And it will get better because of human progress not manmade fears like God.

The past will always be idealized as having been the best in such in such era. However, due to my fascination with history, every time I read about a past time period or watch a special on The History Channel I'm always amazed at how good we have it now; our comforts, our medicine, and especially in America our growing tolerance towards others who may not hold our own beliefs or nonbeliefs.

I'd just like to say to the author: This is a great site and a great comic. Adding the homepage to my opening tabs.
