Dear Sir, Madam,

This month, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Disrimination will determine whether the dutch Sinterklaas feast (and especially the ' Zwarte Piet ' character) is contrary to international conventions. I would like to express my concern about this.
I would like to point out that a possible condemnation by this Committee is a infringement of religious freedom. The Sinterklaas (Saint-Nicholas) celebration, in all its facets is essentially just like a religion. The definition of 'religion' in the Netherlands: God · service (the; m; plural: religions) 1 set of the ceremonies, teachings of a worship; faith, religion. Children in the Netherlands look at Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) much the same way Christians or Muslims look at their God. The age is irrelevant, stating children can't have religion would be age-based discrimination.
Besides, Sinterklaas has all features of the great world religions: there is a divine being-accompanied by one or more prophets; it is based on the idea that the divine being and/or his prophets see and hear everything; there is a book that has a superior status; it proclaims a morality, and living in accordance with this morality is rewarded; the followers of the faith meet in worship of their divinity; songs are sung in glorification of the divinity; it is preached in schools.
In accordance to article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights, religious freedom can be subject to no other restrictions than those that came with the law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interest of public safety, for the protection of public order, health or morals or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.
Clearly, none of the points in article 9 of the European Convention on human rights applies to Zwarte Piet.
Accordingly, a possible condemnation by the UN of Zwarte Piet is in violation of the ECHR.
I urge you to ensure the religious freedom of everybody, including me and my children.
